Would the Top MLB prospects please stand up? What's that no Mets. Oh lord.

So MLB network ran a special on the top fifty prospects in baseball and you know how many Mets farm players were on the list? Zero. Zilch. None. The Giants had two in the top ten. The Red Sox had four on the list as did the Royals and Rays. Phillies and Braves both had three and the Braves had the top guy on the list. None of this is good. It just shows how poorly the Mets have drafted under Omar. Their farm is mid level and they keep talking about the latin development of players but they still aren't where other teams are.

One of the most frustrating things to watch in the injury plagued year that was 09 was the fact that they barely gave any of the young guys a chance. Do I really need to see Fernando Tatis out there? Really? And now there is talk he might be the starting 1b. You have to be kidding me. It's bad when you hope that Murphy is the starting 1b. And I like the guy. I mean look what Manuel said about him according to the NY Post, “I think Daniel Murphy can do enough that we can survive.” Survive? really that's your ringing endorsement? Excuse me while I go throw up.

Ok I'm back. My point is that Murphy is their best choice because their farm has nothing. It has less talent out there than a Johnson City strip club. It's not good. And that's Omar's job. And once again he has failed. How can the Mets not have a single guy in MLB's Top 50 prospects? Not one. That's pathetic. And it's on Omar and the scouting team. I don't care if the Wilpons won't pay more than the slot. You should still find talent out there. And apparently they can't. And so they should all go.

Welcome to Mets Coast to Coast.. Oh and Omar has to go.

So welcome to Mets Coast to Coast where you will get all the insight and viewpoints from Mets fans. First off you will get my take on things and I have been told by the other cohorts on this blog that I'm the Mets fan that's been burned too many times and don't believe the hype. The other guys aren't as cynical as I am and tend to believe in the good things to come. What's sad is I was like that.

As a kid I rode the Tug McGraw, "You gotta believe" mantra to my soul. I remember yelling at my step-dad to have some faith during the 86 NLCS when he thought it was all over and that Scott would finish them in Game 7. Which is course is what some of the Mets players themselves felt. I didn't and we all know what happened. Then you have Game Six of the World Series (seriously what was with the game sixes that year) and as a kid I believe in the Mets about as deeply as you can believe in anything.

The next year I got my taste of what was to come as the Mets needed to win just one game from the Cards and Keith guaranteed a playoff spot and they got swept. The next year Cone ran his mouth about the Dodgers and they lost in the NLCS. You had the best talent in baseball and you got one World Series. And the only one in my lifetime.

The 90's were a fiasco from charges in the bullpen to Vince's firecrackers. Then Phillips gets them Piazza and they make the series again after a crazy 99 postseason.
But Bobby V leaves Benitez in too long in game one that changes the series. Phillips gets fired as they had one old dude after another. Duquette somehow is able to get some decent talent for crap but gets let go so they can bring in the amazing Omar Minaya. Or so that's what they tell us.

Now this is what we know about Omar. He was a puppet for Selig and the MLB and bankrupted the Expos to the point the Nationals still don't have any talent in their Farm System. Now that could also be due to the Loria deal with the farms switching teams but still Omar didn't do crap in Montreal.

Omar goes out overpays Pedro who proceeds to starts 79 games for the Mets winning 32 games over four years for 50 million dollars. Even the ardent Mets optimist knew he was only going to last three years if they were lucky. The Mets weren't lucky. Now people give Omar an out saying he overpaid but had to bring Beltran (Who himself is overpaid to the Mets). I believe that's BS because you are in NY and Beltran was signing with whoever overpaid for him after an amazing postseason. Last year was his first truly great year in NY. And of course he gets hurt.

Now my cohorts will say that Omar has his hands tied because of the Wilpons but I think a good GM would break free and not put up with that. See Epstein, Boston. Omar doesn't. He doesn't even know what to say in press conferences. He challenges a sportswriter when he is asked a legit question. He couldn't of handle the Randolph firing any worse and the Bernazard situation was a fiasco. Then recently you have the Beltran knee issue. The whole thing is an mess. And yet he trudges on.

Yes I know not having a set budget doesn't help but then go with lowest common denominator and then see if the Wilpons will go higher if you find someone that is worth it. He doesn't do that. He just muddles uselessly on. It's painful to watch and they haven't addressed any of their needs.

They signed Bay to a contract that is worth too much. You have a smart team in the Sox that didn't sign him and I have to look at when they let players go they seem to be spot on with their timing. I have more faith in their doctors then I do in the Mets. And that's not even taking how a larger ballpark will expose his poor d and lessen his numbers. No way he's hitting the HRs and doubles he did at Fenway.

They have more questions that the freaking Riddler when it comes to starting pitching and the bullpen. Then you have Francouer who is a huge question mark. Will he be the player he was for the Mets or the guy that couldn't hit the past couple of years for the Braves?

There is also something horribly wrong with Omar. He doesn't pay attention to stats. As baseball has gone geek with number crunching the Mets are considered one of only two or three teams that don't really use statistical analysis in their moves. Apparently Omar doesn't believe in Sabermatics. Go read Moneyball again and see how Billy Beane describes Omar. It's not a good thing.

Then this week Ken Rosenthal talks about how they blew the Molina deal that every Mets fan though was going to happen. Then they could of sign Pinero but Omar screwed that up. Hell they apparently would of lost Bay had another suitor come up which also means they were outbidding themselves for the guys. Horrible horrible signs.

So I'm not optimistic. This all happens as the Phillies have gotten smarter and the Braves are looking to restock again. And of course the Marlins have enough talent to do some damage should they stay healthy. And all of them are spend a lot less money than the Mets. So as the new year begins and baseball is around the corner, I'm not sure I'm too keen on what this year will bring. In fact I'm horrified. And I can only pray that come October I will look back at this feeling of fear and fright and laugh as I was wrongly a Chicken Little. Only I don't expect to.
